March 30, 2011 was my 2nd time to be at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center (EADSC) and 1st time to be at the Bryant George Hall. I attended a forum upon invitation of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.
Entitled "Urban Development and Governance: Risks and Opportunities, Learning from Other Cities", was organized by the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center of Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. in collaboration with the University of Cologne in Germany, Southeast Asian-German Forum for Urban Futures (ForUm-Network) and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region VII.
Also attending in the event was Cebu Bloggers Society, Inc. President Vernon Joseph Go.
The forum facilitated and broadened understanding on the impacts, risks, and opportunities of programs and policies on urban development and governance in other cities. These programs have been established to combat the urban sprawl or to stimulate urban dynamics happening in major cities in Asia.
The forum will highlighted inputs from four international experts and professionals from the ForUm-Network, a network of global experts in the field of urban planning and development.
Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas from the University of Cologne in Germany talked about the rationale about the forum and its importance. She also emphasized its importance as cities around the world are focusing on urban development and how it affects our environment. Her keyword: Leadership and Citizenship.
Mr. Prak Angkeara discussed about the urban networking by participatory community land use planning in Cambodia where their communes have a role in determining land use.
Prof. Dr. Sekson Yongvanit discussed on how Khon Kaen City in Thailand improved itself from green and clean city to low carbon city. He was with Virunpob Supab from the Ministry of Natural Resources in Thailand during the talk. Khon Kaen City is also aiming to be a Green City in Thailand and launched a program to plant 840,000 trees in honor of their King who is now 84 years old.
Prof. Le Thu Hoa talked about how Hanoi is doing on urban planning and how the city is coping with the environmental challenges. She also presented several planning methods that are in use although not all of them were compulsorily used.
Dr. Goh Hong Ching spoke about the risks being faced now by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and expressed her discontent of the SMART project of Malaysia. She also showed to the forum participants on how Kuala Lumpur is flooded during minor rains and how basement parking spaces are coping with this.
